Job Description Draft :
Whenever I mention working at Nickelodeon, I can tell people envision a variety of tasks beyond my actual role. However, there was so much more involved than just cartoons and slime! After a year of working monotonous record label internships, one of my professors introduced me to a music manager at Nickelodeon, jump starting my interview process with them. After a few applications and interview rounds, they offered me the Music and Talent Internship position!
This position had many functions, which I appreciated as someone unsure of what route to take at the time. I worked for both the network music team and record label, which involved a wide range of responsibilities. The original music team focused on sourcing scripted music and handling creative briefs for Nickelodeon's TV and Film productions, while the record label focused on developing the careers of young actors and artists.
While the job covers many areas, some descriptions that could sum up my role here is
Project Management
Creative Oversight
Music Strategy
Project Management
At such a big network like Paramount, there are so many clearance issues and royalty projects to navigate. For example, I had to ensure the accurate registration of all Nickelodeon music and film soundtracks since 2015. This involved managing the song data, publishing contacts, and licensing requirements of every project released through their network. I was in charge of streamlining this process by using software such as Asana, Airtable and Disco to make sure all necessary details were in place. There were harsh deadlines in place for many of these tasks, making the role even more demanding.
Creative Oversight
In addition to the technical projects, many jobs required my creative direction, such as our weekly remix playlists. This project called for us to develop various playlist themes to remix weekly for existing Nickelodeon songs. This included compiling licensed songs that fit the intended theme, and could foster widespread streams. This remix project was an important way for them to increase exposure and generate extra revenue. We worked with producers who shared our vision and could create child-friendly remixes that still appeal to a broad audience. There were many other creative opportunities for me, such as pitching emerging artists that we could sign to our label. This involved going through their discography and evaluating the potential of their music and artistry.
Music Strategy
Being strategic in our music curation and selection skills was crucial. First, we handled creative briefs for TV and films in production. This involves reviewing song submissions for potential use as a theme song, or in a soundtrack. We would listen to several variations of the same song, deciphering which options best fit the vision and thematic need of the producer. From coordinating featured performances, to meeting with composers, this role was the most engaging and impactful in shaping Nickelodeon's media influence. I even got to sit in on a live recording session for Dora The Explorer!
