Random Post 1: NY vs LA
NY vs LA: My Ongoing Internal Debate
I’ve always been a pretty decisive girl, and choosing USC as my dream school felt like a no-brainer; palm trees, warm weather, and year-long access to the beach beckoned me, and I longed for the four long years where I could immerse myself in California culture, living a life that felt like an endless vacation. Growing up in New York, life on the west coast seemed like a foreign concept, and for my parents, sending their daughter across the country to live there was even more daunting. I had no doubt in my mind that I would thrive in LA, as all the core tenets of the city– its focus on wellness, adventure, and vibrant space for creativity– aligned perfectly with my lifestyle. However, as the years went on and my LA experience progressed, certain moments began to illuminate my enduring love and appreciation for New York. These circumstances sparked an ongoing battle in my head about which city is the best place for me to call home. Both places offer elements that are integral to who I am, culminating in a decision I never anticipated having to make.
My New York-bred personality is constantly revealing itself throughout my life on the west coast, as this foundation is the bedrock of who I am. Besides my fast-paced and ambitious approach to work and life, the familiarity and close-knit community in New York has always grounded me. I grew up in Long Island, and most people I know from all around the tri-state area make their way back to New York City after college, fostering a sense of comfort and belonging. I love the fact that everything is walkable, and everyone is just a short train ride away. Life in the city is kind of like an extension of college, filled with fun social activities with many people you know or have lots in common with, all of whom embody a work-hard play-hard mindset. The walkability and endless opportunities to explore within the city cultivates a sense of freedom and endless excitement to become part of this flourishing community. And, the fact that my family is there is just icing on the cake, as I can go home whenever I want and watch my little sister grow up – it seems unbeatable!
On the other hand, the beautiful places and ideal lifestyle that LA offers is incredibly alluring. The ocean and mountain views surrounding me along with the perfect weather that allows me to walk and explore amazing hike and beach destinations at any time of the year feels so hard to give up. As a gluten-free, dairy-free, health-conscious individual, it feels like LA was made for me, as every restaurant and cafe perfectly accommodates and caters to my needs and preferences. I love that being active is a cornerstone of life here, and the laid-back culture is extremely calming and refreshing. It’s certainly not as chaotic and bustling as New York is, and while I do enjoy the hustle and vibrant life there, the tranquility of LA is undeniably appealing.
At this point in my life, where my post-graduate job is unknown and up in the air, I am in a constant state of conflict and debate. I am so fortunate to have experienced the rich qualities of these two amazing places, both offering elements that are integral to my ideal life and would ultimately help me thrive. And the debate continues...
An impossible debate... I feel like everyone is torn between cities right now. I love how you discussed how each city brings out something different in you. Each one definitely has its pros and cons but I think you would thrive anywhere!!!
ReplyDeleteI can see why choosing between NYC and LA can be challenging. It's so interesting how you were able to experience and live in both of the cities - I feel like not many people have had the chance to do so. Whichever city you choose, I bet you'll make the most of it and be happy!
ReplyDeleteWest Coast vs. East Coast can be a super difficult decision, especially when deciding the next step in your career post-grad. As a SoCal native, I'm biased when I say move to LA: there are so many things to do, richly diverse culture, the SoCal Challenge, and great social opportunities. My mindset is that you'll always know where home is, and you're never going to be completely disconnected from the friends and family that love you so much. Deep down, you'll figure out what's best for you, but if you're looking to make new friends post-grad in the SoCal area, check out @newpsthesocialclub on TikTok!
